Heaven’s Success Story at YCC

"The staff at YCC motivated me to stick out."

Heaven came to YCC in September of 2022 after having some challenges in the traditional high school setting. She was behind academically after frequent moves and was on the verge of dropping out of school.

Heaven had a friend that was attending YCC that encouraged her to try it out, so she decided to give YCC a shot. She was apprehensive at first, not knowing what to expect. The first week at YCC she quickly warmed up to the staff. When asked what made her want to stick it out at YCC, Heaven said, it’s really the staff, how they talk and how they express themselves to the students.”

Since coming to YCC, Heaven has not only done the work needed to earn her diploma, but she also earned her OSHA 10 and NCCER construction certifications and has been a standout member of our YouthBuild program.

Her peers noticed her enthusiasm and leadership qualities and nominated Heaven to join YCC’s Youth Policy Council (YPC). Members of the Youth Policy Council get an opportunity to work on leadership skills, public speaking, and collaborate with YCC staff on planning activities for their fellow YouthBuild members.

Heaven will be joining YCC’s Graduate Construction Crew. Graduate Construction Crew members have the opportunity to continue their construction skills training alongside our Construction Supervisor at our affordable housing sites.

Events like ROCKEGAN our spring concert on April 20th featuring Ivy Ford, help generate vital funding that allow us to continue to empower young adults like Heaven.
