2023 MLK Day of Service

As in years past, Youth Conservation Corps (YCC) provided volunteers at a number of sites in Waukegan in honor of the Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service on January 16th. Here’s a rundown of how YCC’s YouthBuild members and staff helped area nonprofits this year:

Fuller Center for Housing/Hero Project: Cleaned out furniture, organized supplies, moved file cabinets, painted backdrops for new video studio

HACES: Moved files, shredded old materials, performed light cleaning, created goodie bags

Legacy Reentry Foundation: Painted walls, cleaned carpeting, hung blinds, cut/painted small pieces of wood for wall design

Northern Illinois Recovery Community Organization (NIRCO): To prepare classroom spaces, the team removed old items and brought them to a dumpster; electronic materials were separated for recycling

The MLK Day of Service is AmeriCorps’ biggest philanthropic effort. AmeriCorps, the federal agency for national service and volunteerism, provides opportunities for Americans to serve their country domestically, address the nation’s most pressing challenges, improve lives and communities, and strengthen civic engagement. Each year, the agency places more than 200,000 AmeriCorps members and AmeriCorps Seniors volunteers in intensive service roles; and empowers millions more to serve as long-term, short-term, or one-time volunteers.
