Winter

Martin Luther King Jr. National Day of Service - The Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service, which takes place the third Monday of January, is a defining moment each year when Americans step up to take action to create the Beloved Community of Dr. King’s dream.

Examples of MLK Day service projects in which YCC members and partners have participated include construction projects on-site at our YCC facility and in the Waukegan-area community.

Spring

Earth Day/Earth Week – Earth Day is an annual celebration in April that honors the achievements of the environmental movement and raises awareness of the need to protect Earth’s natural resources for future generations. YCC celebrates Earth Week and its own legacy of conservation with projects that highlight sustainability and ecological awareness

Examples of Earth Week service projects include cleanups in neighborhood parks in the Waukegan area to prepare for spring blossoming and enhance community enjoyment of outdoor spaces.

Fall

September 11 National Day of Service and Remembrance – September 11th is Patriot Day and a National Day of Service and Remembrance. On this day Americans across the country are called to volunteer in their local communities in tribute to the individuals lost and injured in the attacks, first responders, and the many who have risen in service to defend freedom.

Veterans Day – Veterans Day, formerly known as Armistice Day, was originally set as a U.S. legal holiday to honor the end of World War I. In 1954, the 83rd U.S. Congress struck the word “Armistice” and inserted the word “Veterans” to make November 11th a day to honor American veterans of all wars.

Examples of 9/11 and Veteran’s Day service projects include clearing invasive species from Lake County open lands to allow native plants and wildlife to flourish.
