About the Youth Conservation CorpsFrom its inception in 1974, Youth Conservation Corps Waukegan has been devoted to the development of youth and young adults in Lake County. We are entering our third decade strong in our ability to fulfill our mission to guide and mentor young adults using community service, job skills training and education to develop productive citizens of Lake County. YCC Waukegan sponsors two main programs. The YCC Summer Program, in partnership with the Lake County Forest Preserves, engages high school students in outdoor work projects designed to teach them about the environment and conservation of our natural resources. The YCC YouthBuild Program is a ten-month community development program that engages at-risk, low-income, out-of-school youth ages 16-24 by helping them obtain their GED and teaching them construction and carpentry skills through on-the-job training. YCC Waukegan is incorporated as a 501 (c)(3) and employs a full-time staff of twelve dedicated professionals, some of whom are serving as AmeriCorps VISTA’s (Volunteers in Service to America).
